Welcome
The Wellington Java User Group serves as a focal point for those in Wellington, New Zealand, who are interested in the Java programming language, and the Java Virtual Machine platform.
We aim to meet on the third Wednesday of every month to discuss Java related topics. The user group is run on a purely voluntary basis. There are no fees, and all are welcome.
We are always on the lookout for people to present topics at our meetings.

November: Exceptional Workshop
The stars of the famous IllegalArgument podcast and JVM fans from around New Zealand converge for the Exceptional Workshop at Victoria University November 18/19.
November: Whiley
Whiley is a new programming language being developed at Victoria University of Wellington. Whiley is unusual in that it includes first-class pre- and post-conditions, and aims to check them at compile time. Whiley has a number of other interesting features, including flow-sensitive and structural typing. This gives Whiley the look and feel of a dynamically typed language, whilst retaining all the advantages of static typing. Whiley compiles to the JVM, is fully inter-operable with Java and can be downloaded from http://whiley.org.
In this talk, David will introduce Whiley and explore its interesting features. He will also look at the challenges involved in developing a modern programming language, from testing to the standard library to Eclipse plugins.
Speaker: David Pearce
David graduated from Imperial College London in 2005, and has since taken up a lecturer position at Victoria University of Wellington, NZ. David's thesis was on efficient algorithms for pointer analysis of C, and his techniques have since been incorporated into GCC. His interests are in programming languages, compilers and static analysis. David is particularly interested in tools and languages that eliminate software errors. David has previously interned at Bell Labs, New Jersey, where he worked on compilers for FPGAs; and also at IBM Hursely, UK, where he worked with the AspectJ development team on profiling systems.
